Bergamot Calabrian

Botanical name: Citrus bergamia

Family: Rutaceae

Orgin: Italy, Morocco & native to tropical Asia.

Camphor White

Botanical name: Cinnamomum camophora (L) Nees. Camphor white 'Uncrossing, purification & brings celibacy'

Contra-indications: Camphor oil contains 40% of Camphor the chemical. Large amounts of Camphor can cause convulsions. Should not be used in Aromatherapy.

History: It is a well known preventive of moths and other insects, such as worms in wood: Natural history cabinets are made from Camphor. The wood of the tree being occasionally imported to make cabinets for entomologists. In China and Japan, Camphor can often grow as old as a thousand years. To produce this oil it must be at least 50years old. People that know about Camphor place it in a silk bag, then around their neck to cure agues. In the 13th century, Marco Polo noted that Camphor oil was highly valued by the Chinese people as a medicine, scent and embalming fluid. Apply Camphor Essential oil mixed into a solution to wardrobes, cupboards and dark enclosed areas.

Therapeutic uses: Digestive and a tonic. For digestive problems dilute 5 drops into 10mls of carrier (Almond sweet) and gently rub the abdoment. Massage: Female - anti-clockwise. Male - clock-wise.Research from the 1960s onwards shows that the volatile oil has a strong antispasmodic action, confirming the herb's effectiveness in relieving wind and treating colic and griping. Contra-indications:Do not use directly on the skin. Non-toxic, non irritant and nonpsensiting.

History: A well known oil in history (one of the oldest) as it was used extensively in Egypt to make perfumes. As far as we know the oil has been around for over 3000yrs and was used in medicine, cooking, perfumery and incense. cardamom is used in India for many conditions, including asthma, bronchitis, kidney stones, anorexia, debility and weakened vata (from ether & air, the air principle 'vata' is created;fire & water yield the fire principle 'pitta'; & earth and water produce the water principle 'kapha'. The principles correspond closely to the three humours of Tibetan medicine and somewhat resemble Galens's theory of the four humours.

Bronchitis, TB, anaemia, glandular & lymph tonic. Urinary infections. An excellent insecticide and can be used with citronella for this purpose. Contra-indications:Too high a dosage could cause nausea. Will irritate sensitieve skin. Abortive properties. Should not be used by pregnant woment. Not to be used on babies.Non-toxic, non-irritant & non-sensitising.

History:The wood (Lebanon) was used in building temples and palaces in the Middle East and vast quantities were used to build Solomon's great temple in Jerusalem. The cedar of Lebanonas possibly used to build the Hanging gardens of of Babylon. Probably one of the first oils extracted and used in mummification process.

Origin: Native to Europe cultivated extensively in my country Hungary & New Zealand also Eastern Europe, Egypt, Morocco, France & on a small scale in Australia.

Method of extraction: Steam distillation.

Part of plant used: Flower heads.

Major chemical constitiuents:

Colour: Deep blue & thick.

Properties: Analgesic, anti-allergenic, anti-inflammatory, antiphlogistic, antispasmodic, bactercidal, carminative, cicatrisant, cholagogue, emmengogue, heptic, sedative, stomachi, sudorific, vasconstrictor, vermifuge & vulnerary.

Therapeutic uses: An morning oil.Quietens overactive mind. Antispasmodic-stimulates liver to reduce inflammation because of it's low toxicity it is good for the liver. Relaxes and calms all tissues in body. A long term oil. German Chamomile contains (-)-a-Bisbolol which promotes granulation and tissue regeneration and a strong anti-inflammatory. An affinity to the female reproductive system it balances the hormones. Contrad-indications: Emmenogogue-avoid in early pregnancy.

History:The Egyptians dedicated the Chamomile to the sun and worshipped it above all the other herbs for it's healing properties, while Greek physicians prescribed it for fevers and female disorders. Among the Nine Sacred Herbs of the "Lacnunga", an ancient Anglo-saxon manuscript, Chamomile is the "Maythen". Moreover, Chamomile has inspired a proverb about energy in adversity, "like a chamomile bed, the more it is trodden the more it will spread. Chamomile is also valued for it's sweet apple-scented leaves. In a popular gardening book of 1638, William Lawson wrote of the "large walks, broad and long, like the Temple groves in Thessaly, raised with gravel and sand, having seats and banks of Chamomile-all this delights the mind and brings health to the body" . The relaxing aroma was also inhaled as snuff or smoked to relieve asthma and cure insomnia. At beauty salons, Chamomile tea is often served to relax facial muscles in Europe. A cream made in Germany from German Chamomile was tested in 1987 for it's ability to heal wounds and produced very positive results. In 1993, a trial using German chamomile and 4 other herbs showed them to be most effective at easing infantile colic. German Chamomile has been for digestive problems since at least the 1st century AD. Gentle and efficacious, it is very suitable for children. The herb is valuable for pain, indigestion, acidity, gastritis, wind, bloating & colic. It is also used for hiatus hernia, peptic ulcer, Crohn's disease and irritable bowel syndrome. German Chamomile which contains spiroether, a strong antispasmodic, eases tense muscles & period pain. It also relieves irritablity & promotes sleep, especially in children. The herb is useful for hay fever & asthma. On steam distillation, the proazulenes produce chamazulene, which is markedly anti-allergenic. Externally, it can be applied to sore, itchy skin, sore nipples & eczema. It also relieves eyestrain. A poultice can be applied to sore breasts.

Mind, body & Spirit: Scientific evidence shows that the tea is a valid anti-spasmodic for relieving cramps. The main consitituent Azulene, is a powerful healing for wounds inflamed skins(acne, eczema verticaria, case of allergic reaction), rheumatic conditions, pre-menstrual tension, female disorders, belching, digestive problems, insomnia & teething trouble in children.

P.S. I use this oil in the morning for children and Roman Chamomile in the evening for a peaceful night. German & Roman can be used together. Flower & leaf maybe used in potpurri and herb pillows. The infused flower used as a tea for a general tonic and sedative which is good for restless children and their nightmares. Apple a compress to treat wounds and eczema to treat wounds and eczema. Use in a bath to relieve sun or wind-burnt skin. Grow this "Physician" plant near a failing plant to revive it. Infuse and spray on seedlings to prevent "damping off" and on compost to activate decomposition.

Chamomile Roman

Origin:Native to western Europe, Roman chamomile is now cultivated across Europe, and also in other temperate regions. The flowers are harvested as they open summer.

Part of plant used: Fresh or dried flowers Major chemical constituents:Roman chamomile contains up to 1.75% essential oil (including tiglic & angelic acid esters, chamazulene & other sesquiterpene lactones), flavonoids, coumarins & phenolic acids. Colour: Properties:Anti-anaemic, Anti-neuralgic, anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic, digestive,febrifuge & nerve sedative.

Therapeutic uses: Calms & strengthens. Hypnotic-bypasses stubborness. Sudorific-weak-induces perspriation only when you have a fever. Roman Chamomile does not contain (-)-a-bisabolol.

Contra-indications:

History: Though called Roman chamomile, this herb was not cultivated in Rome until the 16th century, probably arriving there from Britain.The plant has also been named in modern herbals as an antispasmodic, useful for menstrual cramps; as an appetite stimulant; as a mild sedative; and as an agent that reduces pain and swelling injuries. chamomile's medicinal use acan be traced to ancient Eygpt, where priets sometimes used the flowers to treat fever patients. It was the Greeks of antiquity who named the plant 'Khamaimelon' (lossely translated 'ground apple'), since it creeps along the ground and the flowers have an apple-like aroma.In colonial Australia & New Zealand, the European settlers used a flower infusion as a tonic & to treat dyspepsia & biliousness. Various chamomile decoctions were applied to bruises, sprains boils & abscesses, & a strong decoction made from the flowers was used to cure earache.

Therapeutic uses:1% during winter not to be used in Australia during summer as massge oil. Application increases body temperature watch out for client's body temperature. Respiratory & childbirth-hot towels-2nd stage of labour. Opens up lungs. Extracts of the bark have anti-bacterial & anti-fungal actions. Cinnamon is asupportive & strengthening herb for weakdigestions. It is used specifically in the treatment of debility & in convalescene. The herb has a slight emmenagogic action-stimulating the uterus & encouraging menstrual bleeding. In India, it is taken after childbirth as a contraceptive. Contra-indications: The bark oil is considered a dermal toxin, irritant & sensitiser. Cinnamon bark oil should never be used on the skin. The leaf oil is relatively non-toxic As eugenol is the major constituent of cinnamon leaf oil & clove, it should be assumed to have similar hazards to clove oil. Not recommended for skincare Traditionally used in clearing warts. History:In the 1980's, Japanese research into the constituent cinnamaldehyde showed it to be sedative & analgesic. It is also thought to reduce blood pressure & fevers. As well as being one of the wprld's most important spices, cinnamon is an ancient herbal medicine, first written about in the Jewish religious text, the "Torah". Cinnamon has along history of ise in India & was first used medicinally in Egypt & parts of Europe from about 500BC. Traditionally, the herb was taken for colds, flu & digestive problems, & it is still used in much the same way today. Properties: Anti-convulsive(primary-eplipsey), Anti-dressant, anti-phlogistic(mild), anti-septic, antispasmodic(very powerful-realises endorphins), astringent(mild), bactericidal, carminative, cicatrisant(when is not healing especially with high blood pressure), emmenagogue, Hypotensive(very powerful), nervine, tonic(on the nervous system) Uterine-(labour pains)-2drops & 1drop of Jasmine in 100ml carrier oil. Use as little as possible. Used only on stressful & high blood pressure people.

Therapeutic uses: Happiness, joy-euphoric. Warming, soothing & sedating. An anti-spasmodic & aromatic plant, clary sage is used today mainly to treat digestive problems such as wind & indigestion. Its also regarded as a tonic, calming herb that helps relieve period pain & premenstrual problems. Owing to its oestrogen-stimulating action, it is most effective when levels of this hormone are low. The plant can therfore be a valauable remedy for complaints that are associated with the menopause, particularly hot flushing. Contra-indications: Narcotic, avoid in pregnanacy, low toxic. When using Clary sage do not take any medication containing 'iron'. Large doses may induce intoxication-resulting in poisoning & severe headaches. Do not take clary sage internally & do not use during pregnancy. History: Used as a fixative (ingredient) of Eau de Cologne, perfumes & cosmetics.

Wintergreen

WINTERGREEN –‘Lucky money oil’

Botanical name:Gaultheria procumbens

Therapeutic uses:Rheumatism, inflammation, sciatica, and skin diseases.  Infuse leaves as a tea and as a gargle for headaches and sore throats. Samuel Thomson, founder of the 19thcentury Physiomedicalist  movement, combined it with hemlock (Conium maculatum) to treat severe fluid retenention

Contra-indications:A powerful oil please use with care.  Can irritate skin & mucous membranes. If skin is irritated by using high levels of concentrated Cajeput then use Niaouli - melaleuca viridiflora.  Do not use for a long time. Use as required then stop.  People who are sensitive to aspirin should not take wintergreen internally.  Oil of wintergreen should never be taken internally, nor applied (even well diluted) to the skin of children under 12 unless under professional supervision. Can irritate skin and mucous membranes.

Not for Asthmatics (only in a blend). Powerful oil - Use with care.

Harmonises reproductive system, good with Clary sage when menopausal. Balance's the hormones - valuable for the reproductive system. Tonic to the womb and gastroenteritis. Contra-indications:Excessive use may lead to headaches and nausea (use sparingly) Could irritate sensitive skin. do not use on inflammatory skin condition e.g. dermatitis. Prolonged use may have opposite effect - over stimulation. Do not use on tomboyish, casual, lively, young balanced women (use lime or verbena instead).

History: 'The flower of flowers'inMalaysia. In the south Seas women dress their hair with the oil of Ylang Ylang. In Indonesia the beds are spread with petals for the newly weds on their wedding night. In the Molucca Islands,Philpphines an ointment is made Ylang Ylang in coconut oil for hair care purposes.
